Chapter 11

Instructions for developing a thesis statement are found in chapter 11 of the Bedford Researcher. Thesis statements can be tricky and hard to create. It is important to continually reference your position and review your notes to find the right information and ideas you want to express in your thesis statement. Your thesis can be taken from a research question, feedback on sources, and an evaluation of any research done. The Bedford Researcher explains that a thesis statement is "the most important idea or argument you want to convey" (203) in your paper. Many authors have various drafts of their thesis statement before they decide on the best, most focused version.

This chapter explains how to make the best thesis statement for your topic. If a thesis statement is too broad, it does not do its job properly because it cannot be argued. Being able to draft your thesis by considering all aspects of your topic and project with this chapter is really nice to have. Your thesis statement essentially sets the tone for the whole paper. A weak, badly constructed thesis can make a reader feel negatively about your topic before they have even read your whole paper.
